Her father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from Wheaton North High School in 1981. Prior to moving into Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. The first role she had was as a model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also appeared in several advertisements. She appeared in 1988's romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was then cast as a frequent character in ABC drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Her debut role on television was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime show NYPD Blue. O'Grady played the secretary with long hair of the team from 1993 until 1996. In 1995, O'Grady was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series alongside the entire cast.
